Designs
Welcome to the Designs Area
The UK Intellectual Property office defines a Design as "the appearance of the whole or part of a product resulting from the features of, in particular, the lines, contours, colours, shape, texture or materials of the product or ornamentation."
Typically a design represents the exterior "look" of a product.
Understanding your approach
In the UK there are two approaches to having a design. If you file to register a design and it is approved you have up to 25 years protection and exclusive use of the design. If you do not file to register the Design, then you automatically still have what is called a ‘Design Right’ and have 10 years exclusive rights to a design and 5 further years where others can apply for a licence of right.
